Kansas 4-H & FFA State Wheat Show

Barton County Community College Technology Building
Great Bend, Kansas
August 8, 2008, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Participant Information

Purpose:

The purpose of this wheat field day is to educate about the Kansas wheat industry and to provide youth opportunities to participate in and to be recognized in wheat education classes. Participants will take part in hands-on activities and see judging of wheat exhibits in eight divisions including cash prizes. Classes include: (1) 3 lb. bin run for crops members; (2) 3 lb. bin run for “adopt a producer”; (All wheat samples are due to K-State on July 18 so testing can be completed). (3) 1 quart jar sample of cleaned wheat; (4) loaf of yeast bread; (5) four cookies; (6) wheat photography contest; (7) wheat centerpiece contest; and (8) a Cloverbuds division with participation ribbons.

Who Should Register:

4-H youth, FFA youth, parents, volunteer 4-H leaders, Extension staff, Vocational Agriculture Instructors and the public interested in Kansas wheat production and related wheat educational activities are invited.

One day workshop:

The workshop is one-day only. As such, a chaperon is not needed (but they will be welcomed as full participants) for the event.

Registration:

Pre-registration is required for an accurate meal count and for tours by August 1st on the Kansas 4-H web site registration system, www.kansas4-h.org. Click on “Register for 4-H Events, and Kansas 4-H & FFA State Wheat Show.” For those with no computer connections, contact Berny Unruh for a manual food reservation by August 1st at 620-793-1910. Cost:

There is no registration cost. The program is sponsored by Cargill Cares and other sponsors. The event includes tours, opening refreshments, cash awards, ribbons, door prizes, contests, and lunch.

Attire:

The workshop will be held at the Barton County Community College, Technology Building in Great Bend, so dress appropriately. Remember, the Kansas 4-H Dress Code will be in place.

Etiquette:

Participants will be representing themselves, Kansas 4-H, and all youth in general. We expect they will model the six pillars of CHARACTERCOUNTS! of trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Tentative Schedule:

8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. - Registration at Barton County Community College, Technology Building site; fun educational activities; refreshments provided.
9:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. - Pick 1 Tour
1. Educational Tour of Stafford County Flour Mill, Hudson, KS.
2. Bread Art with Joyce Esfeld in hands-on fun activities for youth and adults (limited to the first 20 who register).
3. Ellinwood Tunnels – see the underground prohibition-era tunnels/Dozier Winery.
11:45 a.m. - Lunch on campus
12:45 p.m. - Continue educational activities
1:30 p.m. - Door prizes; Awards presentation and educational comments from judges at BCCC campus.
2:30 p.m. - Program ends
